The Fourth of July might be over, but the summer months are still going strong, which means that many families are still enjoying the fun and festivity of backyard barbecues. Getting together with friends and family for a cookout is a wonderful way for you to help your senior parent get more social interaction and make meaningful memories throughout the summer season. July is National Grilling Month, which makes it a fantastic time for you to keep planning these special activities with your senior parent. While you are planning your cookout, however, it is important that you keep the potential dangers of grilling in mind so that you can protect your loved one and the rest of your family.

Use these tips to help you keep your grilling experiences safe for your senior parent and the other members of your family at your cookouts this summer:

  • Check it out. Before you start your grill, make sure that you check it over carefully to detect any problems or damage that may impact the safety of the equipment. Even seemingly small issues such as cracks in the grill could result in serious problems during operation.
  • Keep it clean. Just because you use your grill to cook outside does not mean that it should not be managed and maintained with the same consideration that you would use with your indoor cooking equipment. This means that it needs to be cleaned thoroughly after each use. Ensuring that the grill is properly cleaned prevents buildup of grease, debris, and food particles that could pose a serious fire hazard when the grill is lit. Make sure that you only use products deemed safe for use on grills to prevent contamination of food and further fire hazard.
  • Position it properly. Select a place for the grill that is far enough away from all buildings, trees, and other potentially flammable objects that if there was a flare it would not catch these items. Be sure that the grill is placed on a level, sturdy surface so that it will not tip or sink suddenly, possibly causing it to spread the flame across the ground or onto people around it.
  • Have a fire extinguisher nearby. Even if you follow all precautions when it comes to starting the grill and maintaining the flame, it is important that you still be prepared for the possibility of a fire. Having a fire extinguisher nearby ensures that if there is an emergency, you can manage it as quickly as possible.
  • Supervise your family. Cookouts are a great time to get together with friends and family, but that could mean that there are both children and senior adults around. These vulnerable people are at greater risk of encountering injuries during grilling. A senior care provider can be an exceptional choice for providing reliable supervision for your aging parent throughout the cookout. This will not only keep them safe from the grill, but also ensure their needs are fully met throughout the experience.
